Title:

Designing Extensive Reading Programs for Children: Developmentally Appropriate Approaches and Practical Activities

Bio:

Lesley Ito is a well-known teacher, teacher trainer, school owner, and award-winning materials writer based in Nagoya. She has taught in Japan for over 30 years, is the owner of BIG BOW English Lab in Nagoya, won “Best of JALT” in 2011 and 2020, and has presented professionally throughout Japan, South Korea, and at the ER World Congress in Dubai, UAE. Winner of the 2015 LLL Award in the Young Learner Category for Backstage Pass, her ELT writing credits include teacher’s guides, workbooks, and graded readers.

Abstract:

Extensive Reading (ER), reading many easy self-selected materials, is a popular way to study English in Asia. However, most research and information on how to do ER focuses on teenagers or adults. ER programs for children, who are often still learning to read English, need to take a different approach. The presenter, an eikawa school owner with over 20 years of experience doing ER with children, will talk about how to create an ER program that will make

children feel motivated to check out books and read on their own. The new concept of “supported extensive” for very young learners, using picture books for shared reading activities in an ER context, will also be covered.
